Spend Less On Your Electric Bill
Without Spending a Penny!

Lots of energy saving tips have you spend money on insulation, energy efficient appliances and other things that cost money. If you have the money to do that, go for it! But many people don't, so here are some things you can do that won't cost you anything and will help you save money on your electric bill. You may not notice a big savings at first, but over time it will make real difference

1.  Turn Down the Temperature of Your Hot Water!  Make sure the temperature of your hot water is not over 120 degrees.

2.  Take Showers instead of Baths!  A typical bath will use 50 gallons of water compared to 13 gallons for a 5 minute shower with an energy efficient shower head.

3.  Turn Down Your Refrigerator!  The refrigerator uses 20% of the average home’s electricity so make sure it is not running too cold. The temperature in your fridge should be 38-40 degrees, and the freezer 0 to 5 degrees.  Defrost the freezer if more than a ¼ inch of frost builds up.

4.  Keep the Freezer Full!  A full freezer wastes less energy. Keep the freezer full of something such as loaves of bread or milk jugs filled with water to keep the cold air from "falling out" when the door is opened.

5.  Run Cold Water for the Disposal! Cold water saves energy and solidifies grease, moving it more easily through the garbage disposal and the pipes.

6.  Wash in Cold Water!  Wash and rinse clothes using cold water. And because it takes as much energy to run a full load as a smaller load, always run a full load.

7.  Use the Clothes Dryer Only When You Have To!  Limit dryer use by hanging clothes outside when possible, particularly bulky items such as jeans, towels and blankets. Can’t hang outside?  Set up a drying rack indoors!

8.  Add a Dry Bath Towel to Each Dryer Load!  Add a clean, dry, bath towel in with the wet load. The towel absorbs moisture from the other clothes, cutting dryer time by as much as 25%.

9.  Clean the Lint Filter in the Clothes Dyer!  Cleaning the lint filter after each load not only saves energy, it reduces the chance of fire!

10.  Cook with Small Appliances! Microwaves toaster ovens and pressure cookers save electricity!  A pressure cooker cuts cooking time by two thirds; a microwave uses less than half the energy of a regular oven.

11.  Turn Off the Oven!  When baking or roasting, turn off the oven 5 minutes or so before your food is done.  It takes awhile for the oven to cool down, so your food will continue to cook without using electricity.

12.  Put A Lid On It!  Cook food and boil water in a covered container whenever possible. This traps the heat inside and requires less energy.

13. Reduce the Heat! Begin cooking on a higher heat setting until the liquid begins to boil, than lower the heat and simmer until the food is fully cooked. A “fast boil” doesn’t cook faster than a slow boil, but it does use more energy.

14.  Use Only the Light You Need!  Light only the areas of the room you need rather than lighting the whole room.  Turn off lights when leaving the room.  Cut down on display and decorative lighting.

15.  Turn it off and Unplug it!  Turn off printers, computers, television, radios and so on when not in use.  Unplug clocks and small appliances when not in use.
